Shalom Aleichem's book characters
Sholom Aleichem, Yiddish literature's most beloved author, was one of the very few modern writers who speaks for an entire people. Born in Ukraine in 1859 as Solomon Rabinovitz, he died in New York in 1916. Even at the height of Russian/Ukrainian anti-Semitism of (1950-1990) he was portrayed as a "Classic Ukrainian" writer. Streets are named after him in Ukraine's capital city of Kiev. Most people know his work by "Fiddler on the Roof" story.
